Figuring Transfiguring
And his raiment became shining, exceeding white as snow; so as no fuller on earth can white them. —When I think about transfiguration, I often think about this line from the Authorized Version. The word ‘white’ is transfigured in it, taken from its familiar adjectival use to a now mostly unfamiliar verbal use. Even better, for us as contemporary readers, the entire line expresses the acme of sublimity in wording we in other contexts associate with advertisement. Advertisement, indeed! Yet another example of Christ’s power to transform, transfigure.
